Republicans Attempt to Silence Voters’ Voices

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, NOVEMBER 2, 2021 – Oklahoma Republicans are putting politics ahead of the people with their newly destroyed redistricting map. If this map is approved, Oklahomans will suffer the unfair consequences of this partisan act for the next ten years.

“The Republican-Super-Majority legislature has told Oklahoma voters that they do not matter. The newly released redistricting map is nothing more than Republicans protecting their super majority at the expense of silencing marginalized communities,” commented Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “This carved up map demonstrates how Republicans want to control who is heard or not heard at the polls.”

“By cutting the Latino community from Congressional District 5 and moving it into the predominantly rural Congressional District 3, Republicans ultimately silence the urban Latino voice and the issues specific to their community.

“Hosting public meetings does not equal transparency. There has been no opportunity for the public to respond to this outrageous slaughter of the map. This is the opposite of transparency. This is Republican politicians picking who they represent, versus the voters choosing their representatives. The Oklahoma Democratic Party calls on voters to call your legislators and tell them you are unhappy with the lack of transparency and the watering down of specific districts causing whole swaths of citizens to have unfair representation. Oklahomans deserve a representative government and this is not it so we must do all we can to stop this,” Andrews concluded.
