Oklahoma Democratic Party Pleased with Execution Stays

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, OCTOBER 27, 2021 – The Oklahoma Democratic Party is pleased with the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals decision to stay the executions for death row inmates Julius Jones and John Grant.

“After the 2014 and 2015 botched executions, recent evidence in Julius Jones’ case, and a case riddled with racial discrimination, I am pleased that the 10th Circuit Court has stayed the executions. This allows a federal court time to look into Oklahoma’s execution procedures and wait for the outcome of pending lawsuits,” said Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews.

“The Pardon and Parole Board recommended to commute the sentence of Julius Jones, yet Governor Stitt refused to commute Jones’ sentence, claiming that a clemency hearing was the appropriate avenue. I am grateful that cooler heads have prevailed and applaud the 10th Circuit for seeing that due process is afforded these men,” concluded Andrews.
