Stitt’s Insulting Nonbinary Comments Alienate Oklahomans

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, OCTOBER 22, 2021 – Stitt’s abhorrent response to the Oklahoma Health Department adding a nonbinary option to birth certificates is insulting to a demographic of Oklahomans he has chosen to exclude and run from.

“Stitt claims that he will ‘protect Oklahoma values and our way of life,’” stated Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “Yet, these comments do not represent Oklahoma values nor our way of life and are nothing more than oppressive.

“Stitt and his Republican cohorts once again represent the Party of exclusion. Stitt’s comment furthers the assault claiming that nonbinary identity doesn’t exist and condemns the OSDH for their settlement,” Andrews continued.

“It’s a sad day when our governor, sworn to protect all Oklahomans, publicly comes out so vehemently against a vulnerable demographic and calls them out as nonexistent.

“Nonbinary individuals deserve to have official documents that represent how they identify. Adding this option to Oklahoma birth certificates provides respect and dignity and moves our state forward. Democrats will continue to fight and protect all individuals’ rights and remain the Party of inclusion unlike the GOP,” Andrews concluded.
