Oklahoma Democrats on State Question 836 and What Comes Next for Oklahoma Voters

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The office of the Oklahoma Secretary of State announced today that organizers of State Question 836 did not receive the 172,993 signatures necessary to place the measure on the ballot in the 2026 election cycle.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party has grave concerns regarding the State of Oklahoma’s untested validation process for signature verification, and supports a thorough review to ensure Oklahomans have a choice on this ballot measure when they vote in November.

“Oklahoma Democrats believe in the people’s right to direct democracy. Republicans have repeatedly attempted to limit the citizen petition process. We share the disappointment that SQ836 may not make it to the ballot, but we will continue to lead the way for Oklahoma voters to have more choices and opportunities to vote,” said Erin Brewer, chair of the ODP.

“The support behind this petition is just a piece of what we are seeing, a groundswell of voters who are fed up by our current leadership's lack of action and accountability. While this petition didn’t reach enough signatures, voters' desire for change remains strong,” said Lauren Craig, Executive Director of the ODP.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party’s message to Oklahoma voters is simple: if you want stronger public schools, affordable healthcare, and paychecks that keep up, now is the time to register as a Democrat. Make your voice heard in our primary elections by supporting a Democratic candidate running to take back the State Legislature for the people of Oklahoma.
