VIRGIN: McGirt Funding A Chance To Reset Tribal Relations

OKLAHOMA CITY — House Minority Leader Emily Virgin, D-Norman, released the following statement today after Congress announced $62 million to help sovereign tribal nations implement changes to their criminal justice system after the Supreme Court’s McGirt decision.

“The $62 million in the congressional budget package represents a way forward for Oklahoma and the sovereign tribal nations,” said House Minority Leader Emily Virgin. “It is no secret that Governor Stitt has damaged Oklahoma’s relationship with the tribal nations. This money, these resources are an opportunity for this relationship to be reset so that we can continue the mutually beneficial alliance between the State of Oklahoma and our tribal partners. Now is the time to work together for the betterment of all four million Oklahomans.

“I urge every member of Oklahoma’s Congressional delegation to support this funding bill, which brings needed resources to both Oklahoma and the sovereign tribal nations.”
