The Oklahoma Democratic Party Responds to Julius Jones’ Commutation

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, NOVEMBER 18, 2021 – After learning that Julius Jones’ death sentence had been commuted to life without the possibility of parole, Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, issued the following statement:

“The Oklahoma Democratic Party is relieved to learn that the sentence for Julius Jones has been commuted and he has the opportunity to live and continue to inspire meaningful conversation around criminal justice reform in the state of Oklahoma,” commented Alicia Andrews, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair.

“The state can now breathe a collective sigh of relief after a long, unnecessarily drawn-out decision by the governor.

“There are living breathing families on both sides of this case that now have a starting place for a new reality. Activists, both seasoned and newly activated also have a new starting point, a new rallying cry for social justice for all,” Andrews continued.

“A much broader conversation is required. It is time to talk about the barbaric practice, particularly as it has been carried out in Oklahoma over the last four executions.

“In the coming days, I call upon those that are affected by this decision to hold their loved ones close, take some time for self-care, and come back with new resolve because the work of improving the lives of Oklahomans is not done,” concluded Andrews.
