The Oklahoma Democratic Party Honors the Loss of a Vibrant Party Loyalist

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, December 17, 2020 – The Oklahoma Democratic Party is deeply saddened by the news of Judy Calhoun’s sudden and untimely passing, a life-long loyal Democrat and activist for worker’s rights. Judy served on the Oklahoma Democratic Party’s Central Committee from 2001-2019. She was the Fourth Congressional District Vice-Chair for the 2007-2009 term and served as Secretary the other years. As a dedicated Democrat, she was also a National Delegate to the DNC Conventions in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016.

As an active member of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) Local 1999, Judy served as the Financial Secretary/Treasurer. She was a long-term member of the Oklahoma Federation of Democratic Women – South OKC Women’s Club as their current Secretary, Vice-Chair 2013-2015, and President 2015-2017.

Judy touched many lives far and wide with her community involvement, especially supporting labor-friendly candidates and workers’ rights. She was honored with the John A. Reed Spirit of the Community Award for her tireless dedication to others and the cause.

Numerous former and current legislators, Oklahoma Democratic Party Officers and members, OFDW members, and Southside Friends have expressed their heartfelt sentiments on the life of this incredible well-loved woman. Judy made a significant impact on people, and her contributions to the community will be felt for years to come.

“Judy has been an invaluable asset to the Oklahoma Democratic Party through her activism in campaigning for so many candidates and lobby efforts for working men and women. She was a wonderful friend, so full of energy and high spirited. Her light will live on in the lives that she touched deeply. She will be really missed,” stated Debbie Hougue-Downing, long-time friend, OFDW member, and current Central Committee member representing the Fifth Congressional District as Secretary.

Our condolences go out to Judy Calhoun’s family and friends. Her vibrant and energetic personality will be greatly missed by so many who were fortunate enough to know her.
