Stitt Must Own His Failure to Protect Oklahomans

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, January 11, 2021 – Governor Stitt must take ownership of his failure to protect Oklahomans as our State hits another record high of 6,487 new COVID-19 cases. State leadership’s complacency and failure to implement a statewide plan during the holiday season, a mask mandate, and require transparency has caused our hospitals to reach capacity along with unnecessary deaths.

“Oklahoma is one of sixteen states reporting record highs post-holiday season, yet Stitt has been unresponsive to the crisis playing out in our State for several months. This is incomprehensible. The pandemic has disproportionately impacted the poor and communities of color. Yet, Stitt refuses to understand that people are scared and suffering,” Alicia Andrews, Chairwoman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, stated.

“People are looking to leaders to act like leaders. Positive cases, hospitalization, and deaths are skyrocketing. Students are returning to in-person schooling after holiday gatherings, likely spreading further cases. The reckless responsibility lies with Stitt alone for not doing his job to protect Oklahomans.

“With slower than expected vaccine rollouts, it will take months before we reach herd immunity levels. People will need to continue practicing health experts’ advice to wear masks, wash hands, social distance themselves, and avoid large gatherings for most of 2021, even after taking the vaccine. Oklahoma could be a beacon of hope if only our Governor cared more about our citizens than pandering to the childish ego of a diminished President who continues to spread lies and conspiracies about the pandemic,” concluded Andrews.
