Oklahoma GOP Lawmakers Attack Voting Rights

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, MARCH 23, 2021 – Republicans fear expanding voting rights, particularly in communities of color. They know that Democrats turn out in large numbers when the voting process is made accessible and fair. Oklahoma GOP lawmakers are pushing through legislation to counter federal bill HR-1, the “For the People Act,” designed to improve the voting process for millions of voters.

“This is just more Republican showboating to pander to their extreme right base,” declared Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “If Oklahoma’s Republican lawmakers valued our non-partisan and constitutional right to vote, they would be working on bills that truly make voting rights fair for every Oklahoman. They must do their job and stop trying to justify the Big Lie of widespread election fraud with anti-voting-rights bills.

“These anti-democratic lawmakers are only interested in making themselves look good to a select few, no matter the harm they inflict on our Democracy and brown, black, and other minority voters. It is 100 percent all for show and fear of higher voter turnout that threatens their seats,” continued Andrews.

“Oklahoma lawmakers have an ethical and moral obligation to eliminate barriers to the voting process. They took an oath to serve all Oklahomans, not only their base. Democrats will not be silent nor sit by idly as Republicans suppress voting rights with measures attacking mail-in-ballots and voting reform. It is time to protect voting rights and reform a process that excludes many Oklahomans’ ability to vote,” concluded Andrews.
