Oklahoma Democratic Party Demands That Stitt Veto HB1775

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, MAY 3, 2021 – House Bill 1775 is a reckless bill that sets Oklahoma back decades. HB 1775 attempts to silence truth and present a false narrative on history, especially Black and Native American history. The Oklahoma Democratic Party demands that Governor Stitt do the right thing and veto the bill.

“This bill is shameful. We owe it to future generations as well as society today to teach the truth and educate about our past no matter how uncomfortable the topics may be,” declared Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party.

“Prohibiting the teaching of slavery, women’s suffrage, civil rights, and The Trail of Tears oppress marginalized groups and what America has been working to correct for years. As a result, the Republican Party of 2021 has reached a new low,” continued Andrews.

“We’ve come so far since the early 1900s, but we still have much work to do. Unfortunately, this bill will send a powerful, negative message to anyone considering opening a business here. Worse, it makes it more difficult to eradicate systemic racism and discrimination. Oklahoma, we can do better, and Governor Stitt, we demand that HB 1775 be immediately vetoed,” concluded Andrews.
