DNC Chair Tom Perez on July Jobs Report

DNC Chair Tom Perez on July Jobs Report

After the U.S. Department of Labor released the latest jobs and unemployment numbers, DNC Chair and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Donald Trump’s reckless policies continue to hurt millions of hardworking families. Despite the promises Donald Trump made to the American people, Trump’s economy isn’t helping most Americans. Corporations have used their tax windfalls to line the pockets of their rich executives, not to increase wages for their workers. Meanwhile, workers at places like Harley-Davidson are losing their jobs.

“This November, Americans have a stark choice. Republicans want to keep rewarding the rich. Democrats want to build an economy that works for everyone. We want to create good-paying jobs that allow people to provide for their family and put themselves on a path to retirement security. And we will continue to fight for the economic opportunities every working family deserves.”

Perryman Comments on Wind Catcher Project Cancellation

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. David Perryman expressed extreme disappointment in today’s announcement by Public Service of Oklahoma that it was canceling its Wind Catcher Energy Connection Project. The project was to be the nation’s largest ever wind farm comprised of 800 turbines located in the Oklahoma panhandle. Unfortunately, since the concept of the project was unveiled, it has been under attack by the fossil fuel industry and politicians who are funded by the fossil fuel industry, Perryman said.

“Oklahoma citizens and utility customers across the southwestern U.S. are the losers with the cancellation of this project,” said Perryman, D-Chickasha and minority floor leader for the Oklahoma House of Representatives. “The infrastructure, including all machine heads and hubs were to be manufactured in the U.S., and additional components would be manufactured in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.”

“The 2.5 megawatt turbines were designed to enhance siting efficiency, offer industry-leading reliability and allow for higher energy production,” Perryman said. “The project had been previously approved by regulatory agencies in Arkansas and Louisiana with Oklahoma and Texas dragging their feet. The $300 million in Oklahoma property taxes that this project would have generated, the $65 million in state and local revenue, the 4,400 indirect jobs during construction and 80 permanent jobs once it went online will be hard to replace, but the greatest impact of this project’s cancellation will be consumers losing $7 billion in utility rate savings over the next 25 years. I’m incredibly disappointed with this lost opportunity to further diversify Oklahoma’s economy and bring much needed revenue to our state.”

Americans With Disabilities Act Anniversary Statement

Democrats Are Fighting For People With Disabilities

DNC Chair Tom Perez and former Rep. Tony Coelho, Chair of the DNC Disability Council and the primary sponsor of the ADA, released the following statement celebrating the anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act:

“Twenty-eight years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, marking a historic achievement for equality and inclusivity in America. Today, we celebrate the millions of Americans with disabilities who fought tirelessly for their rights, and the progress we’ve made toward equality in employment, and access to public spaces, transportation and accommodations. Thanks to their courageous activism and bipartisan dedication, more Americans have the right to live freely and independently in their communities.

“But that right is under constant attack. President Trump has openly mocked people with disabilities, and the Republican Party is determined to erode the civil rights of the one in five American adults that have a disability. They’ve worked to slash Medicaid, remove protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, and undermine access to special education programs. And they just nominated yet another Supreme Court justice who would weaken critical protections for people with disabilities.

“The Democratic Party believes no American should ever face discrimination based on their disability status. From the earliest days of the disability rights movement through the Obama administration, Democrats have fought for equality at every turn – and we will not let these Republican attacks to go unchecked. Not only are we dedicated to electing leaders up and down the ballot who will fight for equality for people with disabilities, but we support and invest in candidates like Billie Sutton in South Dakota and others who are fighting to ensure representation in elected office. Come November, voters will show Trump and Republicans that their attacks on the ADA and disability rights are immoral and unacceptable.”

GOP Operatives Not Above the Law

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Democratic Party released the following statement regarding the latest developments on the Medical Marijuana rulings debacle:

From Washington to Oklahoma – voters should be outraged and disturbed by closed-door private meetings and corrupt actions by not only the Oklahoma Board of Health’s overreach rulings but also Republican operatives pushing their private agendas.

While Trump is in Washington doubling back on Russian election interference and questioning our intelligence community, Fallin and her GOP collaboratives are mimicking the same ridiculous Republican leadership and ineffective governing in Oklahoma.

Legalized medical marijuana was taken to a vote of the people and passed on June 26th. The Health Board overreached their authority and banned the sale of smokables and requiring a licensed pharmacist to manage dispensaries. We now learn that as the Health Board met, the Board of Pharmacy Director was busy trying to secure the pharmacist requirement with a job offer. The Health Board attorney blackmails herself with threatening emails. Then, Attorney General Mike Hunter sits back silently and doesn’t counsel Fallin until after she rubber-stamps the measure. Now everyone is trying to back peddle the mess they created.

The Oklahoma GOP and their agents have taken another shameful page right out of Trump’s handbook. From sending self-threatening emails and filing false reports, unethical interference meant to influence decisions, lack of proactive legal counsel, to the Governor’s flip-flopping leadership – the GOP is running amuck in our state.

This brazen attempt to shut down the will of the people at all costs is unacceptable. Oklahoma voters will not stand by as another attempt to squash a State Question approved by voters is torn apart by those opposed to the measure and try to circumvent the will of the people. Oklahomans are fed up with the Republican failed leadership and the lambs that follow. Voters will remember come November.

House Democratic Caucus Chair Issues Statement on Life of Rep. Claudia Griffith

OKLAHOMA CITY – After a memorial service in the House Chamber today, State Rep. Emily Virgin, on behalf of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on the passing of State Rep. Claudia Griffith.

“Today we said goodbye to our friend and colleague, Rep. Claudia Griffith. Even though Claudia’s time in the House was coming to a close, her unexpected absence from our team is deeply felt. She was an enigmatic soul that brought a sense of discernment and justice to our discussions; especially around issues that were most important to her: public health, children, and veterans. Claudia fought tirelessly and dauntlessly to secure access to healthcare for all people because she knew that, to be successful in life, people should be able to feel secure in meeting their most important needs.

“When Claudia joined us in the House, she overcame what many people thought was impossible and she was well on her way to do the same in her Senate race. That is the Claudia we all came to know. She was not afraid to take on a challenge and held her head high regardless of the outcome often coming back to the Capitol early in the morning after long tedious nights fighting for the people of Oklahoma on the House floor. We are stunned by the sudden loss of her presence, her friendship, and her strength of character.

“As she was memorialized today by her friends and family, we were reminded that Claudia would not want us to hang our heads; she would want all of us, across the state, to carry out her mission of compassion and empathy for others. She would want all of us to continue fighting for a better Oklahoma, one that values the lives of all people and gives them hope. We pledge to continue that mission in her memory.

“Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with those that cherished her most, her husband, Jim, her daughter and sons and their spouses, and her new baby granddaughter that she loved with all of her heart.

“The OU College of Public Health has begun the process of establishing an endowed scholarship in memory of Representative Claudia Griffith. Claudia was an alumnus of the College of Public Health, a health care professional and a tireless supporter of the College both personally and legislatively. As a result, the Claudia Griffith Memorial Scholarship (#50538) has been established. Contributions to this scholarship fund may be made by check or online. The link for online givers is https://giving.oufoundation.org/OnlineGivingWeb/Giving/OnlineGiving/PH

“Contributors should choose PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS from the drop down menu and at the bottom of the form denote that it is being made in Memory of Rep. Claudia Griffith.”
