Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Reflects on 19th Amendment Anniversary

OKLAHOMA CITY – On the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, the Oklahoma Democratic Party chair, Alicia Andrews, reflects on today’s historic milestone:

“Today, we celebrate an important and historic milestone. A century ago, women marched on the streets of Washington, D.C., demanding democracy and the right to have their voices heard. Through decades of perseverance, women won the right to vote when the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18th, 1920. We commemorate this day that impacted future changes to voting laws and the progress our country has made,” stated Andrews.

“Just like today, those who fought for voting rights faced similar challenges of voter suppression during a global pandemic. We have made progress these past 100 years, but there is still much to be done. Let us remember that people of color were extricated from democracy,” continues Andrews. “The amendment’s language emphasized that the right to vote was not to be denied based on sex, but many women of color were disenfranchised based on discriminatory Jim Crow laws. Poll taxes and literacy tests targeting people of color were implemented at polling stations. Native Americans were outright banned from voting until The Snyder Act of 1924.”

“As we celebrate on this day and reflect on those who dedicated their lives to the fight for equality, we must remain vigilant as voting rights continue to be sabotaged. Trump and Republicans continue their assault on women’s health, economic security, and equal rights. We must use the power of our voice to influence change, and there is no better way to impact that change than at the ballot box this November.”

“The Oklahoma Democratic Party encourages all eligible voters to celebrate today’s historic milestone by registering to vote or helping eligible voters register to vote and sign up to vote by mail. We all must do our part to protect this constitutional right and help our fellow citizens,” concluded Andrews.

DNC Chair on Third Anniversary of Deadly White Supremacy Rally in Charlottesville

DNC Chair on Third Anniversary of Deadly White Supremacy Rally in Charlottesville

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement on the third anniversary of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA, and the murder of Heather Heyer by one of the rally’s participants:

“Three years ago today, our nation watched in horror as hate and bigotry flooded the streets of Charlottesville. White supremacists, emboldened by this president, left their hoods at home and marched in torchlight, unafraid to show their faces. They chanted racist and anti-Semitic slurs, celebrated symbols of slavery, and viciously murdered Heather Heyer, who had shown up to fight back against their message of hate.

“Instead of condemning the neo-Nazis and Klan members leading this movement, President Trump defended them as ‘very fine people.’ And in the three years since, Trump and his allies have not only allowed such hatred to go unchecked, they have actively encouraged and enabled its perpetrators.

“What we saw three years ago was not an isolated incident. It was the product of a country being led by those more interested in stoking fear and division than hope and unity; by those who believe in fueling hate instead of fighting it. It was a result of the systemic racism that plagues every aspect of our society. Make no mistake: The same sentiment that took to the streets in Charlottesville also took the life of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

“This November, voters will not only make their voices heard on critical issues like health care, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Bigotry will also be on the ballot. And as Americans, we need to elect a president and vice president who will fight for dignity, equality, and justice for all. We need an administration that will confront our nation’s history of racism, not celebrate it from the Oval Office. Unlike Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris know there are not ‘many sides’ to the issue of white supremacy. There is right and wrong. In fact, it was this display of unbridled hatred that inspired Vice President Biden to take on Donald Trump and restore the soul of our nation. Those who gathered in Charlottesville in the name of racism were wrong, and it is up to all of us to stand up for what is right.”

The Oklahoma Democratic Party Applauds Biden on VP Choice

OKLAHOMA CITY – Statement by the Oklahoma Democratic Party on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate:

“The choice of Kamala Harris, a former California Attorney General and U.S. Senator, is a historic moment in history. Harris is the right person to take on Trump and his corrupt administration,” stated the Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairwoman, Alicia Andrews.

“Harris shares Joe Biden’s views on standing up for the backbone of this country, and she has the courage to take on the big fights ahead to win. Harris is a trailblazer, and her leadership will move our country forward. The Democratic Party couldn’t be more excited for her to join the ticket,” concluded Andrews.
