Ceremonial Signing Held for Victims’ Rights Bill

Ceremonial Signing Held for Victims’ Rights Bill

OKLAHOMA CITY – A ceremonial signing held today recognizes the passage of an important new law that will allow Oklahomans to obtain lifetime victim protective orders, according to the bill’s author, state Rep. Wade Rousselot – (D), House District 12.

House Bill 2396, authored by Rousselot, extends the time in which a victim protective order remains in effect from three to five years and allows for a continuous victim protective order under certain conditions.

“Oklahoma, along with the rest of the nation is plagued with domestic violence,” said Rousselot. “The victims of this mental and physical abuse are usually, but not always, women. When a victim fears for their safety because of escalating threats or even instances of violent behavior, they seek a form of protection, just as any of us would. A protective order sets boundaries between the victim and their tormentor. If violated, the tormentor goes to prison.”

Rousselot said in order to renew a protective order, a victim has to face their tormentor in court. Extending the length of time in which the order remains in effect and allowing for a continuous protective order in certain cases, places less of a burden on the victim, he said.

“The continuous protective order ensures the victims who have the most egregious tormentors do not have to face them every five years in court in order to renew the order,” said Rousselot.

Chairman Collins Blasts Mitt Romney’s Breathtaking Hypocrisy on Jobs: Former Corporate Raider Says He Would Protect American Jobs but in Private Sector He Was a Pioneer in the Practice of Shipping Jobs Overseas

Washington Post Investigation Finds That Mitt Romney Invested In and Profited Off Of Companies That Moved Jobs Overseas: LINK

Oklahoma City – Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairman Wallace Collins released the following statement blasting Mitt Romney on his breathtaking hypocrisy on jobs as chronicled in a Washington Post investigation which found that while Mitt Romney pays lip service to protecting American jobs on the campaign trail he was in fact a pioneer in the private sector in the practice of outsourcing jobs overseas. The Washington Post found that as the head of Bain Capital Mitt Romney was a serial outsourcer of jobs and that Bain was among the earliest companies investing in and promoting the practice as a means of making millions for Romney, his partners and investors. Below please find a statement from Chairman Collins:

“Today’s Washington Post story confirms that during his time at Bain Capital, Mitt Romney consistently placed profits before people and bottom lines ahead of those on the assembly lines. The story shows that while Mitt Romney was actively running Bain Capital, they invested in and owned companies that ‘were pioneers in the practice of shipping work from the United States to overseas call centers and factories making computer components.’ That’s not what Oklahoma families are looking for in a President.

“The fact is, it’s ‘Romney Economics’ to the core. It may have been a sweetheart arrangement for Mitt Romney, but for middle class Americans who saw their jobs moved overseas to increase Mitt’s profit margins, it was a raw deal.  With this in mind, Mitt Romney’s hypocrisy on the issue of jobs in breathtaking.  On the campaign trail he says he’ll protect American jobs but it turns out that Mitt Romney was one of the founding fathers of outsourcing American jobs – all while raking in millions for himself.

“President Obama knows we need an economy built to last – that creates jobs of the future and makes things the rest of the world buys – not one built on outsourcing, loopholes, and risky financial deals that jeopardize our entire economy and threaten the security of the middle class. That’s not what Mitt Romney wants—he has a long and documented history of placing short term gains for himself ahead of the long term well-being of middle class American workers. ‘Romney Economics’ didn’t work for Massachusetts, it didn’t work for middle class workers who saw their jobs shipped overseas and it’s not going to work for Oklahoma middle class families.”

THUNDER Basketball’s Russell Westbrook and NEEDS Foundation Shoot to End Hunger

(Oklahoma City, OK) Tomorrow evening at 7 PM state Rep. Richard Morrissette will assume M.C. duties at a very special watch party to cheer on “the team” and highlight the work of the NEEDS Foundation, the charity of THUNDER Basketball’s Russell Westbrook.

The NEEDS Foundation, an organization working to address hunger in Oklahoma and endorsed by Westbrook, will host a THUNDER Basketball watch party for game four of the NBA Finals at Rod Myers’ Deep Fork Grill, Western and I-44.

The NEEDS Foundation collects, and redistributes at no charge, unserved food from area restaurants to provide for Oklahomans struggling to obtain basic nutrition.

“Oklahoma is one of the hungriest places in the U.S. Many of our children and senior citizens average only one meal a day,” said state Rep.Richard Morrissette (D-OKC)

“We throw away millions of pounds of unserved restaurant food every year that is safe and nutritious. The NEEDS Foundation has developed strong relationships with area restaurants and they work very hard to maintain a set of safety standards for transport of donated goods. Russell Westbrook is now the spokesperson for this worthy charity and I commend him for his efforts.”

Morrissette will stand in for Westbrook at the event to act as M.C.  For more information or to attend the watch party, an RSVP is required by calling (405) 625-7705.

“I encourage THUNDER fans to attend. It will be a fun evening!” said Morrissette.

Wallace Backed by 30 Current and Former Legislators

Because working men and women need a voice in Congress

Muskogee, OK – Today, thirty current and former Oklahoma legislators joined Governor Brad Henry in endorsing Rob Wallace as their choice for the 2nd Congressional District. The list of endorsers ranges from current and former legislators in the district to leaders in other parts of the state who understand Oklahoma needs a voice for working men and women in Congress. The list is a diverse group who all agree Wallace is the best leader to provide that strong voice for working men and women.

Senate Democratic Leader Sean Burrage cited Rob Wallace’s deep understanding of the district and his passion to help make the 2nd District a better place for working families as reasons for his endorsement. “Rob Wallace is the best prepared candidate to serve us in Congress. Wallace understands the working men and women of our district, and his heart is in the right place. I know he’ll be a Congressman for the people, not a party or a special interest. He’ll always put people before politics so we can get our economy back on track,” said Burrage.

“To have the respect and support of so many leaders like Senator Sean Burrage and the other leaders means so much to me. It is truly humbling. I know we share a vision to make our state and our country a better place by creating good paying jobs right here in eastern Oklahoma,” stated Rob Wallace.

Former Senator Ben Robinson added with his endorsement, “Rob Wallace is the man we need in Congress to stand up to the special interests that are costing us jobs here in eastern Oklahoma. He is the most prepared candidate to get the job done.”

Wallace’s campaign continues to rack up endorsements from current and former elected officials as well as community leaders. He has already been endorsed by Former Gov. Brad Henry, Former Gov. David Walters, Former Attorney General Drew Edmondson, and earlier this week he received the endorsement of Julie Carson.

Rob Wallace said, “This campaign is about putting a coalition together that believes in sending some Oklahoma common sense to Washington so we can get our economy back on track. It’s time we had a voice for working men and women in Congress. It’s time we stand up to the special interests and make sure the American economy works the middle class again.”
