Fred R. Harris: Oklahoma Icon, Champion of Justice, and Trailblazer for Democratic Unity, Passes at 94

Oklahoma City, OK — The Oklahoma Democratic Party joins Oklahomans and the nation in mourning the loss of former U.S. Senator Fred R. Harris, a dedicated public servant, courageous advocate, and visionary leader who tirelessly fought for justice and equity throughout his life.

Today, we honor not just the man Mr. Harris was, but the enduring example he leaves behind—a legacy of hope, justice, and the belief that together, we can always reach higher.

As a U.S. Senator and a son of Oklahoma, Fred Harris fought for working families, civil rights, and the dignity of every individual. He stood in rooms where hard truths were spoken, unafraid to challenge the status quo and to call for meaningful change. Whether championing economic justice or confronting systemic inequality, Senator Harris remained steadfast in his commitment to building a better, fairer world.

His work on the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, known as the Kerner Commission, exemplified his fearless leadership. At a time when the nation was grappling with racial unrest, Senator Harris helped the commission confront the uncomfortable truths of segregation, systemic racism, and entrenched poverty. The commission’s groundbreaking report declared that “our nation is moving toward two societies, one Black, one white—separate and unequal” and called for sweeping reforms to address inequality. His willingness to demand bold action reflected his belief that our nation is strongest when every community is valued and every voice is heard.

As a senator, Harris also played a critical role in returning the sacred Blue Lake lands to the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, a landmark victory for Indigenous rights and cultural preservation. Beyond his senatorial duties, he served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1969 to 1970, stepping into leadership to heal divisions after the contentious 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Harris also sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, bringing his progressive vision to the national stage.

After his time in the Senate, he became a political science professor at the University of New Mexico, continuing his lifelong commitment to education and public service. His story came full circle as he returned to Chicago for the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where he was a featured speaker for the Oklahoma delegation, inspiring attendees with reflections on progress and unity.

Senator Harris embodied the very essence of what it means to serve—with courage, conviction, and an unrelenting belief in the power of justice. A tireless champion for Indigenous communities, he fought to amplify Tribal voices and secure resources to support sovereignty and cultural preservation. His work was rooted in the belief that all communities deserve to thrive and that our strength lies in ensuring no one is left behind.
