Enough is Enough

OKLAHOMA CITY – Our thoughts are with the victims and their families of the most recent active shooting at a Santa Clarita, California High School, but thoughts and prayers are not enough. It’s time to act.

Once again, citizens are left to wonder when will our elected leaders like Donald Trump, Governor Stitt, and our Oklahoma Republican-Super-Majority Legislators consider the safety of people over special interests? How many lives must be traumatized, or must we lose before our leaders finally take action and pass common-sense gun safety bills, close background check loopholes, and rethink a ban on assault weapons?

With the rise in mass shootings, from 63.2% in 2006 to 82.6% in 2019, we clearly need to address this issue. Americans are tired of all talk and no action. According to a recent Morning Consult poll, 70% of Americans support a ban on assault weapons and want to ensure that these tragedies never happen again. It is time for Trump and Republicans to join Democrats and support comprehensive gun reform.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party is pleased by the U.S Supreme Court’s recent decision to reject an appeal by Remington Arms’ attempt to shield themselves from a lawsuit filed by families of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. The National Rifle Association, closely aligned with Republicans and Trump, has backed the Remington case.
