Attorney General and Representative Randy Grau Continue Republicans’ Attack on Women
Oklahoma City– Last week, State Rep. Randy Grau supported Attorney General Scott Pruitt in his mission to appeal a district court’s ruling to strike down a law from 2011. House Bill 1970 would have made the process of attaining abortion-inducing drugs more difficult for women.
The District Judge that struck down the law stated that the Oklahoma Constitution contains a right to an abortion, a right that Pruitt states has never been recognized in Oklahoma. In May, the Oklahoma County District Court stated that HB 1970 is “an unconstitutional law in violation of the fundamental rights of women to privacy and bodily integrity”- rights which are guaranteed to all citizens under the Oklahoma Constitution.
The Republicans’ unconstitutional crusade against women needs to end. House Bill 1970 puts the health of Oklahoma’s women at risk, rather than protecting their health. The House Bill violates the principle of equal protection of the laws by subjecting women to discrimination on the basis of their gender. The House Bill also violates the right for women to terminate a pregnancy, which is protected as an inherent right by the Oklahoma Constitution, article II, Section 2 and as a fundamental right by the Oklahoma Constitution, art. II, Section 7.
The District Court concluded that the Bill’s requirements “serve no purpose other than to prevent women from obtaining abortions and to punish and discriminate against those women who do”.
Please contact Representative Randy Grau, HD 81, and Attorney General Scott Pruitt and tell them to stop their assault on Oklahoma Women.
