<h2>Judicial Retention in Oklahoma</h2>Oklahoma Democratic Party Voter Guide Debrief: November 5th, 2024 ElectionOklahoma voters have an important role to play on November 5th, 2024. In addition to selecting candidates for other key races, Oklahomans will decide whether to retain several appellate judges. This includes three State Supreme Court justices, three Court of Criminal Appeals judges, and six Court of Civil Appeals judges.<h3>What’s at Stake?</h3>Judicial elections don’t always grab headlines, but this year is different. Conservative dark money groups are targeting the three State Supreme Court justices appointed by Democratic governors. These attacks seek to reshape the court’s composition and could have a lasting impact on how justice is served in Oklahoma. Additionally, there are efforts underway to overhaul the state’s Judicial Nominating Commission, a nonpartisan body that selects nominees for the courts based on merit rather than through direct elections.<h3>How Are Judges Selected in Oklahoma?</h3>Oklahoma’s three appellate courts include the nine-member Supreme Court, the five-member Court of Criminal Appeals, and the 12-member Court of Civil Appeals. Appellate judges are appointed by the governor from a list of three candidates provided by the Judicial Nominating Commission, which was formed in the 1960s to curb corruption and ensure qualified, unbiased candidates are selected.<h3>What is a Retention Election?</h3>Unlike other races, appellate judges don’t run against opponents. Instead, they face retention elections, where voters simply decide “yes” or “no” on whether a judge should remain in office. Judges need a majority vote to stay on the bench, and historically, retention votes pass by wide margins.
