FREDA DESKIN ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR STATE SUPERINTENDENT

Former First Lady Kim Henry to Chair Campaign

Dr. Freda Deskin (D), life-long educator and Oklahoma’s Teacher in Space announced her candidacy for State Superintendent earlier today at both the Oklahoma Science Museum in Oklahoma City and the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa. Deskin was joined by her Campaign Chair Kim Henry, Former First Lady of Oklahoma, and other esteemed education supporters.

With more than 40 years in Oklahoma’s public rural and city schools, Deskin has first-hand experience with the despairing issues our students, educators, and communities are facing daily – including excessive testing, inadequate funding, over-crowded classrooms, teacher shortage and reform efforts that infringe upon local control. From working the broomcorn fields of Garvin Co. at age 13, to later honored as a NASA Teacher in Space by President Ronald Reagan – Freda is no stranger to perseverance with an outcome of excellence.

“I am proud to support Freda Deskin for State Superintendent of Schools. As a mother and an educator, my top priority is to ensure the best education possible for all of our children in Oklahoma. I am convinced that Freda Deskin has the intellect, the  integrity, and the right combination of experience, skills and passion to lead our public schools to greatness and make a true difference for our children for generations to come,” Kim Henry, Campaign Chair.

Freda Deskin has a proven track-record in education experience and leadership and is unmatched by other candidates seeking the office of State Superintendent. Deskin is a certified school teacher and administrator who has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and superintendent; and at the collegiate level as a university dean. She has been an educator in Oklahoma City, Lexington, and Pauls Valley Public Schools; Whitebead Dependent Schools; and trained teachers at the University of Oklahoma. Deskin worked for the State Department of Education under the direction of the well respected John Folks, and is also a member of the Oklahoma Educator Hall of Fame.

“I believe my experience, knowledge, and courage to make tough decisions, places me at the front in the race for Oklahoma’s next State Superintendent. I am a public school advocate and recognize there is room for improvement in schools across our state, as I also recognize the number of schools and classrooms of exemplary quality. I believe in teamwork, and together, we can create a better tomorrow for the children of Oklahoma,” Freda Deskin said.

Deskin has support by Oklahoma education leaders and advocates, as well as, community leaders who encourage voters to choose the most qualified candidate for the children and schools of our Great State. Supporters request voters to ask themselves: why not the best candidate for our children, our schools? Experienced leadership for a change.
